Skin Care - Natural Skin Care

Human skin is an incredible feat of nature. Not only does it protect our organs from the elements and help to regulate body temperature, but it's our first barrier from infection, as well. Actually, the skin is considered an organ in itself -- the body's largest, in fact. Skin care and protection of skin should be an essential part of your health for fitness & beauty regime.

A daily skin care regimen goes a long way in keeping one’s skin healthy and beautiful. You have to give your skin some time and repeat the process every day, no matter what. If you want your skin to look attractive and healthy there are several rules you must follow. The most important is cleansing with natural and reviving substances, for a clean skin is bound to look healthier. Since constant washing removes most natural oils and moisture, and even the acid mantle covering, you must consciously replace these oils, moisture and acid. Your diet should be high in proteins, which can be found in lean meat, fish, and poultry as well as in nuts, beans, milk and eggs. Raw vegetables and fruit of all kinds are essential. Several glasses of water ( this is much underestimated in it's importance) each day are essential to flush the system clear of toxins.

Our skin’s functions are too many to go through here in detail, however it protects our ‘insides’ from the external environment, acting both as a barrier and a filter between ‘outside’ and ‘inside’ our bodies. The skin helps in regulating our body’s temperature, like when we have a fever or we’re physically working hard, we tend to sweat, which is the body’s way to lower the temperature. The skin also protects us from harmful substances entering our body, and it eliminates many toxins introduced through ingestion or even via the skin itself. This takes workload off our Liver and Kidneys to filter out by-products from our body’s metabolism. The skin also breathes and plays a major role in our immune system.

TYPES OF SKINS

Generally skin categorize into one of three different types. Read the following categories to best determine the skin you are in

Sensitive, Fragile or Dry Skin

Your skin may fit into this category because of light coloring with little natural sun protection. It also may have skin sensitivies or allergies. Certain medications can push you into this category also. Gentle products, no harsh acids or alcohol and added moisture are needed.

Balanced or Normal Skin

Not too oily, not to dry and no extreme challenges. Primary goal is to keep healthy condition and promote protection and preventative lifestyle.

Acne Prone or Oily Skin

Usually thicker skin with less wrinkling. Excess oil may need control. Acne lesions may need treatment

The basic steps of skin care are: Cleanse, Exfoliate, Protect. The key here is to find the product type that works best for your skin types. Choosing the wrong products can be worse than doing nothing at all, and with the myriad of choices on the market, confusion can reign.

Natural skin care products are the only way to approach your skin care regime. Natural products, not just natural ingredients that have been added to an otherwise non-natural base, are a great way to take a proactive step towards promoting and maintaining healthy skin. In addition to taking a proactive skin care approach you should also consider doing the same with your diet. Foods that can benefit the skin will also benefit other parts of your body and promote healthy body tissues. Eating foods that have not been highly processed

Good skin care — such as avoiding the sun, washing your skin gently and applying moisturizer regularly — can help delay the natural aging process and prevent many skin problems. These simple skin-care habits will help you protect your skin to keep it healthy and glowing for years to come. Health Articles

Herbal Skin Care

Herbs have been used in skin care from times immemorial. Ancient Ayurvedic texts in India speak of the use various herbs, such as, basil, turmeric, and saffron in skin care preparations. Herbs are now being increasingly used in the manufacture of skin care products across the world because of their healing and rejuvenating properties. Some brands do not even use artificial preservatives in their products, instead depending on the inherent quality of certain herbs to preserve themselves.

Today, aloe vera is one of the most popular herbs, hailed for its skin-soothing and anti-aging properties. It is used in cleansers, face washes, massage creams, sunscreens, and anti-acne products. Tea tree oil is also widely used in skin care products for its antiseptic and anti-acne properties. Ginseng, sage, rosemary, witch hazel, chamomile, calendula, and arnica are also popular. They are used in the manufacture of skin care products for different skin types, based on their properties.

Basil and mint are used in acne skin care because of their anti-bacterial and refreshing properties. Fresh basil or mint juice can be applied everyday on pimples. Turmeric is another essential ingredient in many skin care products because of its antiseptic quality. It ensures a glowing, blemish-free complexion. Fresh turmeric fingers can be ground with a little milk and applied on the face and the body. Pure saffron is widely used in traditional medicinal and skin care preparations in India and the Middle East. A few almonds and saffron strands can be soaked in milk and then ground into a paste with the milk. Mixed with rosewater, this face mask nourishes and revitalizes skin. These are simple herbal skin care preparations that can be made by everybody at home. However, elaborate herbal remedies should not be attempted at home without proper knowledge of herbs and their effects.

To conclude, certain herbs are very beneficial for the skin and products containing them can be used with good effect. However, products of only reputed brands should be used, as the wrong mix of herbs could create problems.

The Natural Way to Care for the Skin

People who care about the health of their skin usually use herbal skin care products. More and more people are embracing herbal skin care products each day. Herbal skin care products have become so popular that you can now find them in many clothing and grocery stores.
Because of the popularity of herbal skin care products, many of the acclaimed manufacturers of chemical skin care products have added herbal products to their skin care lines. Herbs can now be widely found in everything from cleansers to moisturizers. Many people want to use them if for no other reason than that they are natural.

Herbal use in ancient times

The use of herbs for skin care dates back about as far as written history, around 3000 BC in Egypt. Egyptians used roses and fenugreek to prevent wrinkle formation. The Greeks later used cosmetics containing mint. In fact, most ancient cultures have recorded the application of herbs to their skin in an effort to achieve a beautiful complexion.

Use of herbs backed up by studies

Many modern scientific studies have evaluated and verified the healing, cleansing or protective properties of some herbs. Some studies have identified the herbal constituents that perform beneficial tasks on the skin.

Manufacturers take these studies into consideration when formulating their herbal skin care products. One herb that is commonly included in herbal skin care products for acne is rose geranium. Rose geranium contains properties that function as an antimicrobial treatment. It is also sometimes used to treat various skin infections.

More studies on herbal use for skin care needed

There still needs to be a lot of scientific study done on many of the herbs used in herbal skin care products. However, there is little financial motivation to fund studies of these herbs, as their inclusion in skin care formulas cannot be patented. So most people who use these products use them based on what seems to work.

Roses and chamomile are a couple of widely touted skin remedies found in herbal skin care products that remain understudied. However, the positive personal experiences of many people have to the wide use of roses and chamomile for skin care. Chamomile, for example, is touted for its ability to sooth the skin since the Middle Ages. Many people use it when they have a rash.

Homemade herbal skin care products

Herbal skin care products have become so popular that many people have learned to make their own herbal skin care treatments. There are now many books and guides available that describe in detail how to formulate various herbal treatments for specific skin conditions.
